*ACTING FOR CAMERA – Part 1
Tuesdays 7:30pm - 9:00 pm
(Taught by Carla Stockton)
An introduction to acting for and with the camera, which is acting without an audience. Even with a crew of 30 or more people, the actor is in a world unto themselves as soon as they find themselves in front of a camera. We will explore the importance of specificity – how to exploit our nonverbal communication, how to make character limitations and biases work from within, how to get out of our heads and unfreeze emotions so the camera can read them. Most importantly, we will explore ways to tell stories simply, with the least showiness, with the fewest and smallest gestures and sounds
Class size is limited. Register early to reserve your place.
*Suitable for novice actors as well as for those who have had some previous training.

Carla Stockton
Carla Stockton is a very familiar presence to New Haven’s educational theater community. From 1987-2003, she directed multiple student programs including the Amity Summer Theater, Sonnets and Songs, and the All in One Ensemble, which she co-directed with beloved music director Louis Negri, Ph.D. She directed three productions at Guilford High School, headed the North Haven and East Haven theater programs, and taught acting for the New England Academy of Theater as well as for her own company Bagel Fish Productions.
Many of Stockton’s students, people whose names are familiar in area communities, have gone on to professional careers in the theater and film. Eric Santagata, of Branford, who played Sweeny Todd for the All in One Ensemble production of the eponymous play, is now a successful Broadway Actor, Director and Choreographer, Jesse Gabbard of North Haven, is currently enjoying a career as actor and stunt man in Hollywood. Nicholas Borisjuk, who worked with Stockton for over 8 years in all of the programs she directed, is now a mega-successful theatrical sound man, whose work is one of the contributing factors responsible for the success of plays such as Beautiful and Hamilton on Broadway AND on tour. Stephanie Madonna, of East Haven, had a very successful career as a Broadway Stage Manager before she changed careers and became a physical therapist and mom. There are many others, among them NHAOPA’s own artistic director Billy DiCrosta, who starred in 4 productions Stockton directed.
Stockton often writes about drama, and her work – including interviews with multiply decorated playwrights and screenwriters David Henry Hwang (M Butterfly, Flower Drum Song, Aladdin, Tarzan, et al) Robert Schenkkan (All the Way, Hacksaw Ridge, The Quiet American, et al), JT Rogers (Oslo, Blood and Gifts, et al) Jocelyn Bioh (School Girls or the African Mean Girls), and others. – has been featured in publications such as Moment Magazine, The Toast, The Guardian, Guernica and others, and her translation of King Gordogan, by Croatian surrealist playwright Radovan Ivsic, has been produced in several university venues. Stockton holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University, a Master’s degree from Arizona State University, and an M.F.A. from Columbia University’s School of the Arts.
