NOW ACCEPTING NEW STUDENTS!
Summer Small is a passionate, versatile, and high-energy music educator who is thrilled to be part of the New Haven Academy of Performing Arts family. As the director of our Rock Band, A Cappella, and Children’s Musical Theatre classes, Summer brings creativity, warmth, and infectious enthusiasm to every class she teaches. She instantly fell in love with NHAOPA's family-first environment—where students are nurtured not just as performers, but as individuals—and is proud to call it home.
Summer specializes in voice and is a skilled multi-instrumentalist, teaching piano, guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, violin, and saxophone. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Studies from Wagner College in New York City, where she developed a strong foundation in performance, education, and collaborative artistry. During her time at Wagner, she was a member of the a cappella group Good Vibratones, where she discovered a love for vocal arranging and harmony.
Before joining NHAOPA, Summer taught private lessons and led student rock bands at a nationally recognized rock music school. While she valued that experience, it was the supportive, tight-knit, and inspiring community at NHAOPA that captured her heart and made her realize she had found her true home as an educator.
Summer is a proud member of IVTOM, the International Voice Teachers of Mix, and is actively working toward becoming an accredited voice teacher. She currently studies under two of the most respected voice professionals in the field—Senior Advanced Level Coach Edwin Rodriguez and Master Vocal Coach Billy DiCrosta—deepening her technical expertise and expanding her ability to guide students of all ages and skill levels.
Her teaching philosophy centers on creativity, confidence, and musical exploration. With her diverse background in both theatre and music, Summer is dedicated to helping students discover their unique artistic voice and grow into confident, well-rounded performers.
