GUITAR LESSONS
GUITAR LESSONS
Guitar Lessons at New Haven Academy of Performing Arts are designed for students from 5 years old to adults. Young beginners (5 to 6) are evaluated for readiness. We have excellent guitar teachers, who teach on acoustic and electric guitars a variety of styles: rock, blues, jazz, metal, country, pop, classical, and Spanish. No matter what type of guitar classes you are interested in, we have the right teacher for you.
Each class contains elements of music theory, guitar technique, ear-training, sight-reading, solo and ensemble performance, and you will always end each class with your favorite riff or song. Guitar lessons at our Academy are enhanced by the multiple performing opportunities to showcase a solo performance or jam with other musicians, including The NHAOPA Rock Band.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT will i or my child learn in a guitar lesson?
We will provide our first time guitar students with an instrument and all the necessary materials during the first class. Since student guitars are quite affordable and portable, we highly recommend to our students to bring their own guitar on their second class should they choose to enroll in the Academy after the Introductory Class.
Our guitar students begin by learning the parts of the instrument and how to properly hold their guitar. It often takes several classes to achieve the necessary comfort level of holding the instrument, developing strength of the fingers and hands to produce musical sound. We give numerous opportunities for our guitar students to perform throughout the year. Many of our events have become a yearly beloved tradition, such as Halloween Cabaret, The NHAOPA Christmas Spectacular, Valentines Cabaret and the end of school year Showcase. Performing in these and other shows is optional, where students make a personal decision with their teachers and parents as to which shows they wish and are ready to participate in. Our events are very organized, and they are a lot of fun.

HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH GUITAR LESSONS?
It's easy to join our musical family! Either Call us at 475-238-8119 or follow the instructions below and one of our friendly and knowledgeable staff will answer any questions you may have.
Guitar Lessons for Beginners
Our teachers are experts at teaching beginning guitar students. You’ll start by learning single string melodies and easy chord forms. This will enable you to start strumming along and playing the melody right away. You’ll then progress to note reading and tablature, and open chord chord forms that span all six strings.
Guitar Lessons for Kids
We can teach students as young as age 5. It’s very important to begin on a child-sized guitar if you’re under the age of 10-12. Our teachers will assess what size guitar you need in your first lesson and give you advice on where to find a good guitar. They will also focus on materials that are appropriate for young, small hands and bodies such as three string chord forms, and single string melodies.
Guitar Lessons for Adults
We are happy to teach adults who are beginners as well as those who have prior experience. We will tailor our lesson program to meet your needs. We can teach you to read music notation, play chords, and learn just about any style you would like.
Electric Guitar Lessons
Our teachers are ready to teach you to rock on electric guitar. You’ll learn how to read tablature and get started playing power chords in no time. You’ll progress into playing rock chord progressions and learn how to solo using the pentatonic scale in the higher positions.
Acoustic Guitar Lessons
We’ll teach you the chords you need to know to play any acoustic folk song. We can also teach you to play finger style or classical guitar.
